Lemosho Route (10 Day - 8 Days Hiking with overnight in  Crater)

For the more adventurous, we offer a 10 day Lemosho Route with overnight in the Crater.  This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the western side.  It is a little used beautiful way up the Shira Plateau where it then joins the Machame Route  We then follow this route until we reach the Lava Tower at which point we will take the more difficult Western Breach Approach where we will overnight in the crater prior to summiting at Uhuru Peak.

Day 1: Arrival
Our staff will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to your prearranged lodging for the night. Before dinner, your guide will go through all your equipment and supplies; they will sit with you and brief you on the climb ahead.  Turn in early and get a good nights sleep because you are about to start

Day 2 (Hiking day 1): Londorosi gate to Forest Camp (Mti Mkubwa)
The day starts with our staff meeting you after your breakfast at your lodge.  Together you will drive to Londorosi Gate where you will complete the required sign-in and registration.  Here your guide(s), porters, and cook will organize all the equipment and supplies fro the trip.  After all is ready, you will start hiking for a few hours through a lush rain forest jungle.  You may well need your raingear today.  Here you will learn about the plants and local wildlife from your guide.

You will have lunch on the trail and then after an afternoon hike will arrive at Forest Camp also known as Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa).

You will spend the night in your tent that the porters have already pitched by the time you arrive.  Water will be boiled and you will be given warm water to clean up before your cook provides dinner.

Overnight: Forrest Camp (Mti Mkubwa)
Altitude Range: 2,100 m (7,000 ft) to 2,650 m (8,700 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Hiking Time: 3 hours
Habitat: Rain Forrest

Day 3 (Hiking day 2): Forest Camp to Shira One Camp.
In the morning you will be greeted by your camp crew at your tent with tea and hot water to wash with before enjoying breakfast at the mess tent. Todayís walk will take us through the forest where lunch will be served on the way.  After lunch we hike through Shira Ridge and you will get your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro ahead.  We will camp on Shira plateau on at Shira One Camp.  

Once again you will be greeted with warm water for washing and dinner before retiring to your tent for the night.

Here the temperature may well drop to freezing.

Overnight: Shira One Camp
Altitude Range: 2,750 m (9,000 ft) to 3,600 m (11,800 ft)
Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 6 hrs
Habitat: Rain forest and moorland

Day 4 (Hiking day 3): Shira One Camp to Fischers Camp
This will be an easier day to allow for some recuperation.  In the morning after your greeting by your faithful camp crew at your tent with tea and hot water you will be enjoying breakfast at the mess tent. Todayís walk will take us through  more forest where lunch will be served on the way.  After lunch we continue the hike up the western slope of the Kibo Massif to Fischerís Camp which is named after the famous professional mountaineer Scott Fischer who pioneered the route.  

Once again you will be greeted with warm water for washing and dinner before retiring to your tent for the night.

Here the temperature may well drop to freezing.

Overnight: Fischer Camp
Altitude Range: 3,600 m (11,800 ft) to 3,750 (12,300 ft)
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 5 hrs
Habitat: Rain forest and moorland

DAY 5 (HIKING DAY 4): Fischer Camp - Lava Tower

From Fischer Camp the route turns east towards Kibo and you will find yourself hiking through semi-desert and then the fairly rocky conditions upward to the expansive ridgelines of high desert where you will camp at a striking spot near the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters (15,100 ft).

You may wish to spend the evening resting or possibly taking a walk to help with acclimatizing.

Enjoy a magnificent sunset while you wait for your cook to finish preparing a well deserved dinner and the porters get your tents ready for a night of rest in sub zero temperatures.

DAY 6 (HIKING DAY 5):  Lava Tower - Arrow Glacier Camp
After a warm breakfast you will start the hike to Arrow Glacier Camp.  This will be about 5 hours of steep rocky ridges.  It will be especially important that you follow your guideís instructions, stay close together, walk single file, and keep a close eye on the trail.  Your hiking sticks will help with your balance.

You will enjoy lunch at the Arrow Glacier Campsite.  Frequently the weather turns cloudy and rain or snow is possible.  You should turn in early to your cozy tent and get some rest as tomorrow will be a long day.

Altitude Range: 4,600 meters (15,100 ft) - 4,800 meters (15,700 ft)
Hiking Time: 5 hours
Habitat: Rocky terrain with ice fields

DAY 7 (HIKING DAY 6): Arrow Glacier - Kili Crater Camp
After rising early and breakfast before sunrise we will head out.  Your crew will only take the items needed for the next two days and the rest of your gear will start making its way down to our last camp site.  You will only be accompanied with your mountain crew.

You will slowly progress up the last of the Western Breech where you will carefully make you way to the edge of the crater floor.  After about 5 hours of hiking you will enjoy lunch in a truly awesome location.

After about 2 more hours hiking in Kilimanjaro's Crater surrounded by massive glaciers you will eventually reach you campsite in the crater.  You will be able to see Uhuru Peak from camp.  Drink lots of fluids to help avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Altitude Range: 4,800 meters (15,700 ft)  - 5,700 meters (18,600 ft)
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Habitat:  Alpine

DAY 8 (HIKING DAY 7): Kili Crater Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Hut
After breakfast the hike to the summit at Uhuru Peak 5,895 meters (19,340 ft) should only take 1 to 2 hours.  Congratulations, you have made it to the "roof of Africa".  Weather cooperating, you will enjoy a beautiful sunrise over Mawenzi Peak.

Spend some time basking in your achievement.  Take pictures and give a hug or two, but donít get too relaxed and spend too much time on the summit, even if the weather is good. Cold and fatigue will set in quickly and you may find it very difficult to get started again.  It will be best that you get moving again as itís a long way down!  The first part of your descent will take you to Stella Point, and then you will head down through the slippery scree to Barafu Camp. Here you will stop for a short rest before heading down to Mweka Hut.  It will take about 5 hours to work your way down the rock and scree path to the moorland and eventually back into the rain forest.  You will feel intoxicated by the oxygen rich air!  Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. As usual your tents, dinner, and washing water will be prepared.  After sharing stories of the summit Iíll bet you will sleep well tonight!

DAY 9 (HIKING DAY 8): Mweka camp - Mweka Gate - Lodging

After an early and well-deserved breakfast, it is a short 3-hour and scenic hike back to the Mweka Park Gate.  Depending on the weather, the improved trail may be dry or you could be walking on a muddy slippery trail requiring slower speeds and care not to slip.  At the gate you will sign your name and enter your details in a register. To make your achievement official, you will receive a summit certificate. If you reached Stella Point you will be presented with a green certificate, and if you made it all the way to Uhuru Peak you will have earned yourself a gold certificate. Then a drive back to your lodging and a hot shower! 

Perhaps you will want to arrange an optional trip to Arusha for some souvenir shopping.

Take some time out for a bit of celebrating before getting a decent night's rest in a comfortable bed.

DAY 10: Back home

Our staff will transfer you back to Kilimanjaro International airport for your onward flights, Zanzibar, Dar Es Salaam or your National Parks safari.
